Anatomy students exploring the origin and insertion of musculature

Life Drawing Group:  Weds evenings 6:30 - 9:30, $250 for 3 months.

Uninstructed.  This group is ongoing, with artists registering for 3 months at a time.  Easels, tables, lights, and stools provided.  Artists work in a darkened room with lighting on their easels.  This allows the model to be lit for a dramatic high contrast image.   Artists may draw or paint as desired.  Digital artists welcome.

Next 3 month series begins February 2013.

Human Anatomy for Artitsts:  6 month course for students who are serious about learning artistic anatomy.   This is not an easy subject to master, but it is one of the most rewarding.   Six months will just get you started on the basics - mastery will take several years of intense practice and study.

6 month commitment required.   Current series is closed to new students.

Next series will begin in Sept. 2013

Tuition will be $175 per month (includes model fees.)

"Reclining figure" by Michelle Philip

 Class description:

For centuries, serious artists have developed their drawing and painting skill by testing themselves with the figure.  As humans, we are especially sensitive to the nuances and expressiveness of the gesture of the body.  It is one of the most absorbing and fascinating subjects an artist can interpret.

This class will incorporate anatomy of the skeleton, the muscular system, the behaviour of light and shadow on the figure, and capturing the essence of humanity.  We will work from both long and short poses so that students get a chance to work with gesture as well as careful rendering.

Students who want a lot of anatomy instruction leading to a classical ideal will get it in this class.

Some drawing experience is helpful.  If you aren't sure whether you are ready for this class, please call or e-mail me and I can help you decide.

Reviews:

I have a degree in painting drawing and sculpture from 1985. Recently I have been getting back into drawing. I was looking for a class to take, when I found the “Classical Art Academy“. I was really surprised to find out how much more Michelle is teaching me than I ever learned in college. Her instructions are very easy to understand and follow. Michelle is very patient and fun to be around. I am learning so much and am having a blast. I look forward to my drawing class every week and am planning on sticking with it for quite some time.  Bill Meuser

I've been taking Michelle’s classes every now and then for about 3 years and I’m always amazed with my progress under her thoughtful and precise instruction. As an art instructor Michelle is absolutely fantastic. She will push you to the level you’ve never thought you could achieve. And on the personal level she is simply the girl you want to be around: cheerful, always optimistic with great sense of humor.  Olga Dmitrieva

I stumbled upon the Classical Art Academy after struggling with how to get myself back into making art. The Academy offerings fit my schedule, budget and most importantly- my desire to get myself working consistently again. I'm currently coming to the Wednesday evening portrait drawing sessions as well as the monthly Sunday workshops, and both are excellent opportunities to work on your observation and drawing/painting skills, while receiving Michelle's excellent instruction. Michelle is a gem whom fosters a rich and supportive environment for artists of all levels. I've allowed myself to start slowly, and it feels amazing to draw again. I am very excited to graduate myself into painting this coming year, and to continue to use the Classical Art Academy as an inspiration and vehicle for fitting more art into my life.  Lindsey Jane Tierney
