Exploring Painting
If you will be working in a medium other than oils, please call me about materials. 303-443-5251.
Oil Painters-
- If you already own oil paints, bring them all, plus your brushes and your palette. I will sort through your supplies and see what else you might need.
-If you don't own any paints or brushes yet, please don't buy a full set of paints or brushes until after the first class. Oil paint is expensive and I want to give you advice on how to shop to get good quality materials. If you want to order materials on the internet right away, here is a list of colors I recommend:
-Alizarin crimson
-Cadmium yellow medium (optional)
-Cadmium yellow lemon
-Cadmium Orange (optional)
-Cadmium red light
-Ultramarine blue
-Cerulean blue "hue"
-Viridian
-Burnt Sienna
-Burnt Umber
-Raw umber
-Yellow Ochre
-Ivory Black
-Large tube of titanium white. Whites containing zinc are not recommended due to evidence that zinc white causes brittle paint films.
- Students taking their first class with me will learn how to stretch canvas and should bring the following materials to the first class:
Piece of 12oz. cotton canvas at least 24" x 30" (Have it cut from a roll at the art supply store)
Set of medium duty stretcher bars to make a 16" x 20" canvas
16 oz. bottle of white acrylic gesso (Golden or Liquitex brand)
Foam brush about 3" wide - we will be discarding these after use
Plastic bowl such as a cool whip tub
Roll of paper towels
1 unprimed masonite panel, 1/4" thick, any size between 8" x 10" and 16" x 20"
------------------------------
Alla Prima Portrait Painting
Palette (recommend 12" x 16 Masterson palette seal with 12" x 16" disposable palette pad)
Brush washer (recommend metal type with interior basket and clamp down lid)
Turpenoid (not Turpenoid "natural"), or Gamsol, or Mona Lisa artist grade mineral spirits
New 11" x 14" canvas or gessoed masonite panel every class
Palette knife
Paper towels
Trash bag such as grocery sack
Brushes - sorry, but I am extremely particular about brushes. They must be long handled, with long flexible boar bristles, and they must be filberts. The perfect brush for alla prima is the Silver Grand Prix series 1003 filbert, size 6. Buy 2 or 3 size 6 brushes. Sizes 2 and 4 are also useful, and a size 8 is nice for covering large areas of background quickly.
You will also need a size 3 kolinsky sable long handled pointed round.
To take care of these nice brushes, I recommend Masters brush cleaner and conditioner. (Serial brush abusers will be forced to model for the class.)
Paints:
We work with a limited palette. Each student will experiment with the following palettes -
I. Burnt Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, Ivory black, white.
II. Cadmium Red light, Yellow Ochre, Ivory black, white.
III. Venetian Red (or Terra rosa), Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Cerulean Blue, Ivory Black, White.
IV. Your choice.
Large tube of titanium white
Regular size tubes of the following colors:
Ivory or mars black
Ultramarine blue - optional - will not be used in flesh color - only for clothing and backgrounds
Burnt Umber
Yellow Ochre
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium red light (not required for first month)
Raw Umber (not required for first month)
Cerulean blue Genuine (not "Hue" - not required for first month.)
Raw sienna - required for imprimatura
Viridian - required for imprimatura
Figure Painting
Materials are the same as for Alla Prima Portrait, except you may want to work on larger canvas or panels. 18" x 24" canvases are a good size if you use large brushes, or you can gesso mat board or watercolor paper. (Gesso both sides to minimize curling.) We will discuss options in class.
Also, please bring a good quality 1 1/2 inch flat chisel-edged house painting brush.
